BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – At 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, the City of Brentwood will honor local veterans with its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Brentwood Police Headquarters, 910 Heritage Way.
“The Brentwood community has always sought to honor the service and sacrifices of our service members, and this ceremony is a way of thanking those men and women who provide the freedoms we enjoy every day,” Vice Mayor Rhea Little III said.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Day “is the day set aside to thank and honor all those who served honorably in the military — in wartime or peacetime.” The day, which honors all branches of service, is always celebrated on Nov. 11, commemorating the official end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918.
The city is hosting the ceremony at the Brentwood Police Headquarters because it will become the future site of the city’s veterans’ memorial. Last year, the city created an Ad Hoc Committee, with Little as chair, to spearhead an official veterans’ monument on city property. The ad hoc committee hired Hodgson Douglas Landscape Architects for the project, and the firm designed a monument that makes full use of the area’s natural serenity.
The committee recently launched a fundraising campaign to raise $1.5 million for the monument.
Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Michael Scholes, deputy commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Veterans Services, will serve as the Veterans Day keynote speaker. He previously served as the Special Assistant to the Director of the Army National Guard in Arlington, Virginia; as the Chief of Staff, Kosovo Forces, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO); and as Director of Operations, Training, Exercises (J3), Joint Task Force-Civil Support, United States Northern Command (USNORTHCOM).
The event is free and open to the public. For information on the Brentwood Veterans Monument, visit this link.
